Pros: I've had these cards in 2 systems operating 24x7 for 3 years. Never a problem. The Linux drivers work flawlessly and the CLI tools have a very natural command interface. Pair this card with the BBU (which gets a bit hot unfortunately) and you've got a solid, inexpensive RAID setup that will last.
Cons: BBU gets a bit hot
Pros: This was actually a great card and worked well for me for quite some time (I have one each in my HTPC/Media Server and Workstation). Unfortunately, they dropped support for Mac OS and I can' t="" update="" my="" machine="" past="" os="" x="" 10.7="" (earlier="" versions="" of="" 10.8="" are="" said="" to="" work).="" can't="" believe="" they="" would="" drop="" support="" so="" quick.="" i="" used="" to="" be="" an="" adamant="" supporter="" of="" the="" company="" and="" have="" installed="" this="" and="" the="" 4-port="" versions="" on="" many="" of="" the="" machines="" i="" have="" built="" for="" my="" friends.="" i="" will="" no="" longer="" purchase="" 3ware="" items="" and="" regret="" my="" past="" support.="">
Cons: Drivers frequently lag behind OS releases. Ultimate, driver support stopped completely for Mac OS X.
Pros: Using it for max. data security ' mirror="" drives'.="" when="" a="" drive="" fails="" just="" pop="" a="" new="" one="" in="" and="" it="" rebuilds="" without="" any="" down="" time.="">
Cons: none
Pros: It was a tough decision spending 500$ on a raid card, but I' m="" glad="" i="" did.="" with="" 3ware's="" reputation,="" warranty,="" and="" the="" options="" that="" come="" with="" the="" card="" you="" really="" cant="" go="" wrong.="" raid="" 6="" is="" also="" an="" awesome="" choice.="" pci="" express="" 4x,8x,="" and="" 16x="" slot="" compatibility="" is="" great.="" 3ware's="" 3dm2="" software="" is="" also="" really="" good.="" the="" email="" alert="" option="" is="" a="" nice="" feature.="" most="" option="" can="" be="" set="" with="" in="" windows.="" fw="" flashing="" can="" also="" be="" done="" in="" windows.="" however,="" i="" highly="" recommend="" flashing="" it="" through="" the="" cards="" bios.="" the="" help="" in="" 3dm2="" provides="" explanations="" of="" the="" options="" you="" are="" viewing,="" and="" how="" and="" why="" they="" should="" be="" used.="">
Cons: * The most frustrating thing about this card is not the card itself, but the 3ware/LSI website. LSI really needs to take a little time to redesign their website. Trying to find the newest drivers and FW is a pain.
* Card initialization after post is a little slow.
* The cashe battery dose not come with the card, and must be purchased separately for ~ 100$. A car battery is less than this! The battery will only last 3 days with no power. If you have a battery backup, there really is no need for it, as long as you have power to the board.
Overall Review: If you have never owned or used a hardware raid card before, I suggest you do a little research. There is a lot to consider before purchasing a card. After your purchase you will want to read the manual from start to finish. Make sure you become familiar with all the settings and options the card offers. Some option can only be set before the array is created. Understanding each option before you creating your array will maximize performance, and protection based on your needs.
System:
Windows 7 Pro, Intel Q6600, nVidia nForce 780i, 4Gb OCZ 1066, nVidia GeForce Gtx 280
Raid Card Specs:
Raid 6 - 6 WD RE3 500 GB, 1 WD RE4 500 GB - 2.27 TB
Average write speed for Raid 6 is 80 Mb/s. Max is ~100 Mb/s. Samson go mic windows 10. Read speed for raid 6 is ~200 - 250 Mb/s. Continues verifying seems to have little effect on performance.
Pros: I had this card for over 2 years now. It's sitting in a sever that is on all the time. It's connected to 8 1TB drives in Raid5. Never had a problem with it. Never lost data. Never locked up. Could not be more happy.
In the time I had this setup, 1 drive failed on me. It sent me an alert. I replaced the drive and all is well. It automatically does everything.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: When you install there software '3ware 3DM2' you get a nice web page. It allows you to do everything through the browser: Setup alerts when disk fail. Migrate raids and disks. Replace disks and much more.
Pros: Want a card that can last forever, extremely easy to use, and solid like nothing else in your system, with management that just works?
This is the one! I will also claim this statement all the 9650SE cards.
Cons: None. Everything just works, and has on three other systems I've used this 8LPML and 4LPML cards on. I couldn't imagine building a RAID system for anyone and not using one of these devices.
Overall Review: I have been a user of a single 9650SE-8LPML for the last 10 years! Without a single hiccup from the device. My server is running CentOS 5 (initially CentOS 4) with 6 WD RE3-GP 1 Tera drives. The server is used to store all my documentation, photos, music, and movies. I stream movies from this system EVERY day (my kids more so), and has not been turned off for more than 10 hours in ten years (only reason for the 10 hours was the OS upgrade, moving homes, and lengthy power outages).
I just had one of my drives fail, so I am back to Newegg to pick a few up, and figured I better comment on this card.
I have read other posts about WD Black drives falling out of raid, and this is due to a sleep bit on these drives. They are not Enterprise (RE) which are made for RAID use. But I also just read a post where someone got one of these cards and that problem went away. Just another reason to condone and love this device!
Thank you 3ware, and thank you Newegg!!
Pros: Perfect
Cons: Expensive
Overall Review: 5 drives in raid 6.
3ware 9650se Driver Free
Pros: 8 SATA ports, PCIeX4, onboard memory and raid 5 calculations, excellent compatibility, no problems with my Asus P6T. Actually allowed me to raid 5 4X 750GB Caviar Black drives without issue! Something I'll keep around for years to come. Probably the only piece I won't replace in the next year.
3ware 9650se Driver Update
Cons: pricey, but worth the expenditure. not 6Gb SATA, not PCIe 2.0. :(
Overall Review: I got mine free due to helping out a LSI rep that wanted to sell my company on using their new raid arrays in our products. (All he did was take some pictures of how we used the old arrays, I didn't give him any proprietary data or company secrets.)
I tried using the Intel ICH10R controller to raid 4 WD 750GB Caviar Black drives together, but the stupid thing kept dropping one drive (all 4 were dropped at various points, so not a bad drive) and it would have to rebuild. I gave up on them for a while, until I got this controller. This controller allowed me to use those same drives without issue, plus split them into 2 separate volumes so that the bios could boot from it and still give me the whole capacity. 350MB/s, 4X750GB RAID 5! awesome!
I am so happy I got this controller.
