This is Marty from Blue Lightning TV. Adobe introduced the Oil Paint filter in Photoshop CS and I'm proud to say Adobe showcased my tutorial on its website. Starting in version CC, Adobe removed the oil paint filter. However, in this tutorial, I'll show you where & how to install an oil paint filter that you can download for free. So you can see huge difference in before and after especially you can see the oil paint effect on the hairs of the subject. Oil paint filter actually comes default in photoshop cc and cs6 version but in older version you have to add that oil paint plugin manually so in this post i have shown you those who don't have in-built oil paint plugin they can install this plugin manually for free.

Oil Paint filter is grayed out and disabled under Filter > Stylize

  • I'd like the oil paint filter back. When I'm shooting models in the fields, this filter ads a van Gogh'ian touch to the background, if not overdone. It needs to be strokes, so just a soft filter wouldn't cut it. And no, running two installations on the same machine to feature a single plugin is not a solution, it's not even a propter workaround.
  • The Pixel Bender filter is a free filter that works with Adobe Photoshop CS5. The filter has several effects, but honestly, besides the Oil Paint filter, I didn’t see much use for the others. • Welcome to another Video tutorial in Photoshop. In this video I will show you How to download and Setup OIL PAINT Filter in CC 2014 & 2015 in Windows.

If Oil Paint is grayed out for you, try these steps:

  • Make sure that your document is RGB. Oil Paint won't work on color spaces other than RGB (e.g. CMYK, Lab, etc.)
  • If you're on Windows, make sure you're running a 64-bit OS with the 64-bit version of Photoshop. OpenCL requires 64-bit
  • Make sure Use Graphics Processor is checked under Preferences > Performance
  • Make sure that your video card driver is up to date with the latest from the vendor website.

Note: If your video card does not support OpenCL v1.1 or higher, you may need to purchase an upgraded video card that supports OpenCL v1.1 or higher to gain access to the Oil Paint filter.

Information about your graphics card can be found in Photoshop's Help > System Info dialog.
