Media Player For Windows Vista

Problem Description: I have a new HP laptop - 3 months old - which was pre-loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium. I am having a problem with Windows Media Player, I have loaded some photos onto the laptop from my digital camera, which also include some short movies from the camera. However when I open the photos folder and try to play the movies I get an error message saying 'Windows Media Player has stopped working correctly, Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.'. I click on the Close Program button and the window closes but I do not get any notifications for a fix to this fault.
When I first loaded the movies it worked OK, but after trying to view a couple of the movies it has now ceased to work. I get the same error message if I open Windows Media Centre and Select Pictures & Video's option and try to play them that way. However I do not get the error message if I play the sample movies that are pre-loaded onto the computer, they play OK.
I have spoken to the Helpline for where I purchased the Computer, which is Costco, but they are advising me to restore the computer back to an earlier point to see if resolves the issue or if not back to the factory restore as they have been unable to resolve the issue. I am reluctant to do this as I have loaded a lot of Photo's & also my iTunes Library onto the laptop as well as purchasing Microsoft Office for the laptop, all of which will have to be backed up and restored if I go back to the factory restore.
Is there any way to reload the Windows Media Player software only without having to completely restore the laptop.
Also if I go back to a restore point before I loaded my files will they still stay there, or will have I have to reload them, particularly worried about my iTumes library if I go back to a point before I loaded itunes and also my photo's & movies
Any help greatly appreciated as a bit of a technophobe !!!!
